Music News: Green Lantern Talks About Watch The Throne Tour Says The Show Is Theatrical.

DJ Green Lantern knows a thing or two about high-profile hip-hop tours. With a long production and DJing résumé that includes hitting the road with Eminem and Jay-Z, the Rochester, New York, disc jock took a trip down to Atlanta to see the second show of Hov and Kanye West’s Watch the Tour Tour.

Friday night’s opening show was a hit, and according to the Evil Genius, who was seated with his son in the second row, Saturday’s second show didn’t disappoint either. After the concert, Green Lantern checked in with MTV News to give his review. You are now watching the Throne:

Man, it was a real experience. They pulled out all the stops. They got a real crazy production, where it’s these big cubes: One is in the middle of the arena, and the other one is right in front of the stage, and they both will be elevated into the air. The cubes have LEDs on ‘em, so they’re constantly changing colors and video. [Jay and Kanye] are standing on each [cube], and they rise and descend. At certain points in the show, Jay will be in the middle of the arena performing his verse to a song, and Kanye would be on the stage. It’s very ill in that respect.

A lot of back-and-forth with their music in the sense of: a Kanye record, then a Jay record. Then they do a set together. They perform most of the album, most of Watch the Throne. It’s a long show. It doesn’t really seem long, but it’s definitely two-plus hours. It’s every hit imaginable between those guys, which is a lot. And a lot of stuff off the new album.

The video that goes to the songs, there are certain parts in the show that Jay and Kanye are really just watching the video. So you should watch the video too, because it has something to do with the song that’s playing. It’s dope.

From the video to the design, it’s a lot of Kanye influence. You can see his taste in the set design and in the show, using his band, etc. … Definitely a lot of Kanye. He gets deep with the artistic side, stuff that I can see, “OK, that’s a Kanye thing.”

The energy was crazy. They did “N-words in Paris” three times in a row. Three times in a row. Three times! Back-to-back-to-back. There’s a piece at the end when they’re going back and forth, song for song, and it’s got, like, a girl theme to it. I don’t want this to be a spoiler, so I’ll just say the show is definitely a theatrical presentation.

You know how you saw them at the MTV [Video Music] Awards and they did “Otis”? It looked like they were having such a good time together and just hanging out, how they were just laughing and going on? That’s definitely how the whole show was. But this was still literally the second show, so they’re still getting the kinks out of it. But the chemistry is definitely 100 percent.

You just get so used to everybody bringing out guests [at their concerts], but when you sit through this show, you don’t even feel that anybody was supposed to come out. They definitely didn’t need anyone coming out. Being in Atlanta, a lot of people thought Tip might’ve came out for the “Paris (Remix),” but that wasn’t the case. The whole arena was rocking, three times in a row. I saw [record exec] Steve Stoute say somewhere that the whole stadium turned into a club on that song, It definitely did.

I think it’s definitely befitting of the two guys out on the tour, as far as the production level of what they’re used to doing. Like Kanye, if you see his solo show, it’s retarded. The last one he was doing, with the whole white theme onstage. And then Jay’s last tour — they’ve been upping the ante production-wise, video-wise, LEDs, and this is right there with it. It’s on par with it, and they actually upped the ante with the big cubes and how they’re using them. It’s just ill. It’s like those are the thrones, just rising, and they’re rapping and it’s like, “We are now watching the thrones.”

I had my iPhone out, and I was recording during “H.A.M.,” and I was going from the middle of the arena back to the stage. I was literally two rows from the stage, so the cube was right in my face. At that point, Kanye was on the stage, so you couldn’t even see Kanye, because he’s at the top of the cube, but I’m still going back and forth with the camera like, “Man, this is crazy!”

It’s dope that they did that; it definitely adds showmanship, creativity, the whole theatrical element to it, and hip-hop needs that. Especially when we’re going into an age where the show is paying the bills. The music is free, by and large, and hip-hop shows could really step up the production. If you look at this as an example, this could really motivate you and give you some inspiration if you’re a hip-hop artist to say, “You know what? I’m gonna invest some money into a bigger stage show, a better stage show, and really give this show to the world and get booked more because of that.”

I had a great time. I brought my [16-year old] son out with me. He said he just lost 10 pounds, sweating and jumping up and down. He had the time of his life. I brought him backstage, he met the guys, and it was a great night. Thumbs up on Watch the Throne live. source: mtvnews

ARTICLES: Everyone Is Watching The Throne But What Else Should We Watch For.

This ain’t a Jay Z, Kanye or “Watch the Throne” hate post. I’m listening to the album right now and it’s pretty good. But while we’re caught in the hype of 2 of Hip-Hop’s biggest stars coming together and all the #WTT tweets and reviews, it’s a lot more important stuff going on the world we need to be paying attention to, like:

There have been a rash of police brutality cases in the last few weeks, many of which have unfortunately ended in the victims death. But since most of the victims are Black men there’s no media hysteria, congressional investigation or TV movie. A few days ago the epidemic reached London, where a 29 year old father named Mark Duggan was shot down by police in what they described as a gunfight. According to The Guardian, the initial ballistic test showed Mark didn’t fire the bullet that hit an officer, but that it was “police issue”. The evidence of injustice lead many in his community to take to the streets and demand justice for his murder. Good news is at least those cops in New Orleans where found guilty for the police murders in the wake of Hurricane Katrina.

After the initial shock of the USA losing it AAA+ credit rating, and the laying of blame right at the feet of the Tea Party and GOP, some real world issues have begun to emerge. First, the stock market fell as a result of the bad news. Now there is speculation that interest rates could rise and the dollar could fall meaning we would have higher bills and have to use more of our money to pay them. For a country already in a recession awaiting good news, sorry to disappoint, because now they’re talking about the possibility of a second recession. With fewer and fewer jobs available this is going from bad to worse. Oh and we might wanna find out what mystery investor made a $1 billion bet that the US would suffer a downgrade and now stands to profit 1000%.

Yeah we know it’s been hot all over the United States especially on the East Coast, but did you know that in July we broke 9,000 Heat Records? That’s right 9,000! According to reports, “July’s blistering heat wave either tied or set daily records in every state in the country“. In Texas the drought is so bad Governor Rick Perry, who recently hosted a controversial prayer event, prayed for rain. But the drought has gotten so bad that at least one Texas town is preparing to recycle urine into drinking water.

Wisconsin (where I shot my video American Workers vs. Multi-Billionaires) is ground zero for the increasing backlash to the Republicans slash and burn style of governing. Governor Scott Walker so badly misplayed his hand that six state Senate Republicans face recall elections on Tuesday. Even more telling is that Governor Walker and GOP budget poster boy Wisconsin Congressman Paul Ryan have been absent on the campaign stump. Walker has been labeled as “toxic” to the State Senator who blindly supported his dangerous policies. If the Democrats can sweep these Republicans out of office, we could see the beginning of a complete reversal of the GOP domination in the mid-term elections and the end of the Tea Party as we know it.

ARTICLES: How Did Jay-Z and Kanye Manage To Keep Watch The Throne From Leaking…

Kanye West and Jay-Z – collectively dubbed “The Throne” – debuted their collaborative album Watch The Throneto fans who have been eagerly awaiting the album.

Some have been searching feverishly for leaks and snippets, which “The Throne” and their media team have successfully kept secure from bootleggers. There was even an event where an uninvited blogger leaked five low quality rips of the album and posted them to the Web after a Watch The Throne listening party. Prior to it’s release full snippets of the album were available online but later removed. It appears that Watch The Throne is the first big album in some time to avoid the dreaded leak.

Kanye’s career ascension to top billing artist status is a remarkable one. Although employed for some years as a producer for Roc-A-Fella providing smashes for Jay-Z, Beanie Sigel and others, the Chicago product had designs on being a rapper. 2004′s The College Dropout showcased a much more humble version of the artist than we’ve witnessed in recent times with glaring moments of humility from front to end. Each subsequent album from Yeezy showed a bolder side of the artist, gaining him both fans and a certain amount of infamy.

Kanye’s 2010 album My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy was Yeezy at his most creative and perhaps zaniest. With Watch The Throne, listeners could assess that Kanye intends to go even harder than he did on his last solo record and claim his place amongst the best to ever do it.

Kanye’s partner in rhyme Jay-Z has already addressed how their album avoided the clutches of hackers and blogs far too eager to blast out their wares. Jay-Z even mentioned that this unprecedented effort to keep Watch The Throne safe from premature release was a nod to the fans that support the pair. Whatever the case, “The Throne” has made history as this would be the first album between the two to not see early release. Going forward, they have altered the landscape of the recording industry with clever staggering of dates and heavily monitored listening sessions.

Watch The Throne is shaping about to be one of the biggest and most historic music events ever. Will other big names follow in footsteps of the pair and their blueprint? Time will tell.

ARTICLES: RZA On Working With Kanye and Jay-Z For Their Collaborative Project “Watch The Throne”

With recently working on kanye’s last album “My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy” Kanye reached out to Rza to throw more heat his way for Jay-z and Kanye West collaborative album Watch The Throne. Now Rza has a production credit on “New Day” a song which will be on Watch the Throne, RZA explains that his is “really honored” to land a placement on the highly anticipated LP. In a Interview with Rolling Stone, RZA stated that working with the Hip Hop heavyweights was a treat for him.

“I’m really honored to be a part of the project,” he said. “These two are obviously very capable in their own right, so to include me in this classic project is a testament of how much respect we share for one another.”

“Kanye asked me to send tracks while they were in Australia,” he continued. “I just thought I would send some shit that would be rugged. I know they can find the poppy, hip-hop places, but I wanted to send them some real edgy shit. Apparently they thought they were great – Kanye said, ‘Send some more of that Wu shit!’”

Though RZA is yet to hear the finished album, he’s more than excited to hear what the two have created. “In the past, when Jay-Z did Best of Both Worlds with R. Kelly, I thought it was a great album but the campaign went south because of personalities,” he said. “With this project, it’s the best of many worlds. These two guys have a great chemistry and a great relationship. I’m excited.” source hiphopdx
